Chapter 01
1. What is Verbal Ability & Parts of Speech
Verbal Ability assesses how effectively you understand, interpret, and communicate through written English. Every English sentence is constructed from 8 fundamental Parts of Speech: Nouns, Pronouns, Verbs, Adjectives, Adverbs, Prepositions, Conjunctions, and Interjections.
Chapter 02
2. Tenses & Temporal Consistency
Tenses indicate the time of an action (Past, Present, Future) and its state of completion (Simple, Continuous, Perfect, Perfect Continuous). Placement tests frequently evaluate temporal consistency and conditional clauses.
Identify the Error: "If he would have arrived on time, we would not have missed the technical interview."
1
Rule: In the 'if'-clause of a 3rd conditional sentence, use Past Perfect ($\text{had } + V_3$), never 'would have'.
2
Correction: Replace "If he would have arrived" with "If he had arrived".
Correct: "If he had arrived on time, we would not have missed the technical interview."
Chapter 03
3. Articles & Prepositions
Articles (A, An, The) determine specificity. Prepositions denote position, direction, and time. Errors in article omission and prepositional collocations are among the most frequently tested verbal topics.
Problem: Fill in the blank: "The candidate has been preparing for the assessment _______ last month." (for / since / from / by)
1
"Last month" indicates a specific starting point in time in a continuous action.
2
In Present Perfect Continuous ("has been preparing"), use "since" for starting points.
Correct Word: since
Chapter 04
4. Subject-Verb Agreement (The 10 Golden Rules)
A singular subject requires a singular verb ($V_1 + \text{s/es}$ or is/was/has); a plural subject requires a plural verb ($V_1$ or are/were/have). Intervening modifying phrases often obscure the true subject.
Sentence Correction: "One of the most critical factors that influences placement success are consistent practice."
1
Subject of the main clause is "One" (singular) $\implies$ requires singular verb "is", not "are".
2
In relative clause "that influence[s]", antecedent is plural "factors" $\implies$ verb should be "influence".
Correct: "One of the most critical factors that influence placement success is consistent practice."
Chapter 05
5. Sentence Correction, Modifiers & Parallelism
Sentence Correction tests your ability to detect misplaced modifiers, dangling participles, faulty parallelism, and pronoun reference ambiguity.
Chapter 06
6. Vocabulary, Etymology Roots, Synonyms & Antonyms
Vocabulary mastery does not require memorizing thousands of isolated words. By understanding Greek and Latin root words, prefixes, and suffixes, you can deduce the meaning of hundreds of unfamiliar words instantly.
Chapter 07
7. Idioms, Phrases & Phrasal Verbs
Idioms are expressions whose figurative meaning cannot be deduced literally from the individual words. Phrasal verbs combine a verb with a preposition or adverb (e.g., call off, look into, bring about).
Chapter 08
8. Reading Comprehension (RC) Masterclass
Reading Comprehension passages test your capacity to extract main ideas, recognize authorial tone, deduce logical inferences, and scan for factual keywords under tight time constraints.
Chapter 09
9. Para Jumbles & Sentence Sequencing
Para Jumbles present 4 to 6 jumbled sentences that must be rearranged into a coherent, logical paragraph. Finding "Mandatory Pairs" and the opening sentence guarantees rapid solving.
Arrange the Sentences:
A. However, with the rise of modern cloud architectures, latency has decreased dramatically.
B. Historically, data transmission across global servers faced severe bandwidth limitations.
C. This breakthrough has enabled real-time collaboration tools worldwide.
D. As a result, engineering teams can now deploy code concurrently without local bottlenecks.
1
Identify opener: (B) sets historical context ("Historically, data transmission...").
2
Contrast pair: (A) provides the contrast to historical limitation ("However, with the rise of cloud..."). Pair = (B)-(A).
3
Consequence: (C) refers to "This breakthrough" (referring to latency decrease in A). (D) provides the final result ("As a result..."). Pair = (C)-(D).
Correct Sequence: B - A - C - D
Chapter 10
10. Error Spotting & Syntax Verification
Error Spotting divides a sentence into parts (A, B, C, D) and asks you to locate the grammatically incorrect section. Use our 4-point systematic scan to isolate the mistake within seconds.
How can I increase my reading speed for long comprehension passages?
Practice chunk reading (reading 3–4 words at a glance instead of vocalizing word by word) and avoid re-reading sentences. Focus on identifying the topic sentence of each paragraph (usually the first or last sentence), which conveys 80% of the author's primary argument.
How should I memorize new vocabulary words so I don't forget them?
Use the Etymology (Root Word) method combined with Spaced Repetition. Learn roots like bene, mal, chron, loqu, omni. Write 2 original sentences using each new word and practice our interactive Vocabulary tests on VetriPathLearn weekly.
What is the most common grammar mistake that students make in placement exams?
The most frequent error is falling for Intervening Modifiers in Subject-Verb Agreement. For example, in "The quality of these mangoes [is / are] great", students see "mangoes" and choose "are", forgetting that the true singular subject is "The quality" $\implies$ correct verb is "is".
